Box Breathing: A 1-Minute Reset for Busy Days

Box breathing is a simple, steady breath pattern: four counts in, four counts holding, four counts out, four counts holding. Picture tracing the four sides of a square. That's it.

It's easy to remember, it's quiet enough to do anywhere, and many people use it to slow down between meetings, before a hard conversation, or at the end of a full day.

How to do box breathing

  1. Sit or stand comfortably. Let your shoulders drop. Rest your hands wherever feels natural.
  2. Breathe in through your nose for 4. Slowly: 1, 2, 3, 4.
  3. Hold gently for 4. No straining. Just a soft pause.
  4. Breathe out for 4. Let it be slow and smooth.
  5. Hold gently for 4. Then begin again.

Repeat for four rounds, about a minute. If four counts feels like too much, try three. Comfort matters more than the number.

When to try it

  • Before you walk into a meeting or open a difficult email
  • In the car, once you're parked, before heading inside
  • When you notice your shoulders creeping toward your ears
  • As part of an evening wind-down

A note on comfort

Breath practices should feel gentle. If holding your breath feels uncomfortable, skip the holds and simply breathe in for four and out for four, or out a little longer than in. If you feel lightheaded, stop and breathe normally.
