A Simple Evening Wind-Down Ritual (That Takes 5 Minutes)
Share
Most of us go straight from a full day into scrolling, then wonder why our minds are still running at bedtime. A short evening ritual creates a doorway between the day and your rest. It doesn't need to be long or perfect. Five minutes is enough.
The 5-minute evening wind-down
- Dim the room (30 seconds). Lower the lights and put your phone face down or across the room. This is your signal that the day is closing.
- Set the day down (1 minute). Write one sentence about something that happened today, and one thing you can leave for tomorrow. Getting it on paper means you don't have to hold it.
- Soften your body (1 minute). Drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Let your hands rest open. Notice where you're still holding the day, and let that place soften a little.
- Breathe slower on the way out (1 minute). Breathe in for four and out for six. A slightly longer exhale is a simple way to slow down.
- Close with one kind thought (1 minute). What helped today? What are you proud of, even if it's small? Let that be the last thing you hold.
Make it a ritual, not a rule
Some nights you'll do all five steps. Some nights you'll only drop your shoulders and take three breaths. Both count. The point is returning to it, not doing it perfectly.
